More Memories.........
Games we used to play......when we used our imagination!
When we were young we would play so many games. A group of us would get together an decide to maybe play baseball...One kid would go home and get his bat, another his ball and we would all travel to a vacant lot and
play nine innings of (usually) soft ball! |
Sometimes the game would get called because the kid who brought the ball or bat would get mad over something and
take his ball or bat and go home. On other days we would go to each others homes and we would play card games like "War" and "Fish" |
......maybe you Jumped Rope or went to the local playground! What ever you did it was fun!
Remember doing this?
Decorating your bike for the 4th of July

Did you ever do this to your bike to make it sound like a it had a motor?

How about these...?
The Four Seasons
Summer was the time that we all looked forward to..
No More School For 3 Months!
When we were small children, when ever there was a downpour in the summer we would run into the house and put on our bathing suits and go out and play in the rain, splashing in the gutters and floating little pieces of wood or scooped out walnut shell halves making believe they were small boats!
One summer when I was about 4 years old, I was playing in the back yard with my mother watching . I came over to her and sat down on the back steps beside her. All of a sudden I jumped up and started screaming! She must have thought I lost my mind...but I kept getting this awful stinging pain on my butt....over and over again. Finally my mother dropped my pants and out dropped a half dead hornet. Unfortunately hornets don't lose their stingers after the first sting like a honey bee. All I remember about it is how much it hurt at the time.
I remember playing in the back yard of my home
and running around on a warm Summer
night, catching fireflies in a mason jar.
It was just a fun thing to do when I was young.

There was an "Old Swimming Hole" on the Darby Creek that all the kid's used to go to in the summer. I remember the first time I went with the kid's, one of the kids mother gave him "What For" about it because I did not know how to swim at the time.

Fall was a great time of the year....when walking home from school with other playmates.
The streets were lined with many shade trees that would shed their beautiful multicolored leaves.
As we walked home we would kick the piles of leaves and enjoy ourselves,

Winter was always a fun time for us kids....playing in the snow ... sledding!
Just an after thought...
but the snowfalls back when I was growing up
seemed to be a lot heavier than they are today!
Or is this only my imagination at work!

Spring was a great time of the year....when walking to school and walking back home were a pleasant experience
Many times I would stop by a vacant lot about a half block from where we lived and would pick my mother a bouquet of dandelions and violets....I thought I was doing something great..and my mother seemed happy to receive them.
One time when I was picking a bouquet, I felt something hit on the top of my head... It seems as though a bird decided to drop a load and guess where it landed?

It didn't take much to keep us occupied...
we all seemed to enjoy the simple things!
